A terrible error by Motherwell goalkeeper Stevie Woods cost his team a memorable Scottish Cup fourth-round victory over Glasgow giant Rangers at Fir Park yesterday.
Motherwell, without a manager after Alex McLeish's departure to Hibernian, was heading for the quarter-finals after a Richard Gough own goal put it in front for a second time.
But Woods had a rush of blood in the 83rd minute when he tried to play the ball into touch after it had been knocked back to him by Brian Martin. He succeeded only in scuffing it into the path of Gordon Durie, who could not believe his luck as he knocked the ball into an empty net for a 2-2 draw.
Two goals in the last seven minutes sent cup holder Kilmarnock spinning out with a 2-0 loss to local rival Ayr United at Somerset Park.
